RHODIUM plating jewelry
consists of immersion in a specific device, where it is placed in another
liquid metal (usually platinum) which causes the liquid metal set in jewelry. Rhodium is a precious metal
of the platinum family. The rhodium plating is used especially in jewelry to
give a surface that will resist scratches and stains and a white appearance. It
is important to know that the rhodium plating does not last forever. Silver
jewelry that receives a layer of rhodium has a much longer lifetime, especially
against scratching.
ZIRCONIA's chemical name is zirconium
oxide. This oxide occurs in nature in the form of a rare mineral called
baddelyite, which crystallizes in the monoclinic system. There is, however, the
artificial zirconia, which has the same chemical composition, but
crystallizes in the cubic system and is therefore called cubic zirconia. Both
monoclinic as cubic zirconia are used as a gemstone; cubic zirconia
is much better known for being the most perfect imitation diamond ever
obtained. It serves also, by varying the colour,
to imitate other gemstones such as amethyst. So there are two types of
zirconia: natural, monoclinic, call baddelyite, and artificial, cubic,
called cubic zirconia. That's why there are these two crystal structures for
the same substance that the ABNT (Brazilian Technical Standards Association)
recommends to always use the name cubic zirconia, zirconia and not just when you're
talking about Rhinestone.
